| Coach Maz, Mrs. Giddens', and Mrs. Thorne's 5th grade students shared historical fiction narratives about life as a slave. In a pitch dark classroom, students had to share their writings by lantern light. Students experienced the difficulty of navigating the underground railroad. Besides the threat of being caught, traveling by stars, having only a tattered map and quilt code, students were able to recreate some of the conditions and fears of slaves. |

Miss English's First Grade class visited Bartram Forest in October as an extended science activity. Mrs. Trinidad is the extension teacher for first grade and teaches science, social studies, and health. Thanks for arranging our trip, Mrs. Trinidad! | Above, Mrs. Holly Wysong reads to Miss English's first grade class for Make a Difference Day. What a great time we had! Thanks, Mrs. Wysong. |

| Fall of ’05 brought members of Rotary Club International from Japan to Milledgeville, Georgia. Several local Rotary Club members hosted the Japanese guests in their homes. Through a group dinner of local hosts and Japanese guests, a friendship began between Creekside Elementary School music teacher, Donna McMillan, and Rotary member, Hiroko Omaru, director of a school in Japan. The idea of pen pals was conceived. Last Christmas, students from Mrs. Sandra Wright and Miss Pam Brookins swapped Christmas cards with the Japanese students. This year students of Mrs. Mary Kitchings joined the other two classes in making Christmas cards for the Japanese students. Knowing that their cards were going to Japanese students who were beginning English readers, the students took pride in doing their very best work. The children were overjoyed with the box from Japan. It contained the long awaited cards, but so much more. They sent pictures, calendars, fans, rice paper, origami and newspaper ads. The children were fascinated to see the Japanese writing. This is a project we hope to continue in the years to come. |
