Parent University to kick off new year Saturday

Parent University, a group that seeks to empower parents to help their child succeed in school, will kick off the 2009-2010 school year with its first session Saturday.
Parent University is a community-based volunteer organization established to form a bridge between the community and schools, according to promotional literature. The goals of the program are to increase parental involvement, maximize student learning, enable parents to teach each other and provide support, guidance and nurturing to assure the realization of family success.
Saturday’s workshops will be held at Blandy Hills Elementary School, Oak Hill Middle School and Baldwin High School beginning at 8:15 a.m. and adjourning at noon.
At Baldwin High School, sessions include information about parent-teacher conferences, an introductory computer course, Web surfing, returning to school for GED classes, learning about scholarships and a final group session called “Teen Overboard” where parents can learn what to expect from their adolescents.
In addition, Parent University is promoting “The Big Read,” which is featuring the Ray Bradbury classic “Fahrenheit 451.” Parents can join the PTSO and Parent University at the H.O.P.E. (Help Our Parents Educate) Bus Oct. 3 as the portable learning center travels around Milledgeville. The bus will also be in action again Dec. 5 and March 6. Locations will be announced at a later date.
Additional Parent University sessions will be held Nov. 7, Feb. 6 and April 10.
