Baldwin County's Programs for Exceptional Children (PEC) Provides Disabled Students an Opportunity for Educational Excellence

The Baldwin County School System believes all students can unlock their potential by striving for and maintaining educational excellence. Our schools aim to meet the educational needs of all the students.  

Exceptional students require specially designed instruction to meet their unique needs. The curriculum, adapted to their ability, allows exceptional students to meet the educational requirements that apply to all students. 

Program for Exceptional Children staff members understand the needs of these students and provide support to help them meet the demands of our changing society. 

Students in PEC have varying disabilities and are served at all grade levels. PEC teachers utilize a variety of teaching methods aimed to encourage and promote learning. Students participate in many hands-on learning activities, including computer labs and creative writing. 

Baldwin County’s PEC Program serves students according to individual exceptionalities and educational needs:

  • Autism
  • Emotional/Behavior Disorder
  • Hearing impaired
  • Intellectually Disabled ( includes mild, moderate, profound, severe)
  • Orthopedically Impaired
  • Other Health Impaired
  • Preschool Special Education ( significantly developmentally delayed)
  • Specific Learning Disabled
  • Speech and Language Impaired - suggestions for parents
  • Traumatic Brain Injured
  • Visually Impaired

PEC also provides other related services: Occupational Therapy, Orientation and Mobility and Physical Therapy.

Diverse classroom settings allow students to learn in the least restrictive environment, based on their educational needs and individual education program.

  • Extended School Year (Educational programs beyond the normal school year for disabled students) (Power Point presentation)

  • Transition Training (PAES lab at BHS)
  • Related Vocational Instruction

The PEC Program works with many local and state agencies, building partnerships that enhance their ability to meet the needs of diverse students.
